Most ISPs keep newsgroup messages active for a few weeks -- it
depends upon how much activity the group gets and the storage space
available to the ISP. For text-only groups, I can reset my newsreader
and fetch messages all the way back to January 2006 from Earthlink
(Mindspring [Netcom]). Typically, binary groups get faster expirations
(at one time, Netcom was expiring binary message groups at ~24 hours)
due to the size of binary messages (UUencode or Base64 image files).
People don't have to check a group daily -- if the ISP has a 30 day
expiration policy, one could check the group only on the day of a full
moon (~every 29 days) and still get ALL messages posted in that period.
