I think I'd have to be pretty drunk to use "cubic ton" as a unit
of volume. (Though I gather it is used as such, cf. 
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cubic_ton>.)
If 1 cubic ton=
40 cubic feet, then 10 cubic tons =400 cubic feet=10 feet x 10 feet
x 4 feet, then many times that number of cubic tons had to be
removed to make that cliff from out of flat ground at the level of the
tracks (hic).
